Clinical supervision in psychoanalysis training
At Academia Enlevo, clinical supervision is available to anyone who wants it, but it is not required to complete the training. Students can request supervision from Enlevo or choose any other professional or school. Enlevo values the student’s freedom to choose who accompanies their practice.
Supervision is one of the three pillars of the psychoanalytic tripod, along with theoretical study and personal analysis. It is recommended for those starting to see patients, because it is the space to discuss your own cases with a more experienced analyst.
What clinical supervision in psychoanalysis is
Supervision is a regular meeting between the analyst in training and an experienced psychoanalyst to discuss the cases the former is seeing. It is not a class: it is a joint reading of a concrete clinical practice, protecting the patient and forming the analyst.
Why Enlevo leaves supervision as a choice
- The relationship with the supervisor is personal. Choosing who to discuss your own cases with is part of the analyst’s authorization.
- Many students already have ties. Health professionals or students already in analysis may prefer a supervisor they trust.
- Different paces. Not every student starts seeing patients during the training. Requiring supervision for those not yet seeing patients would make little sense.
Supervision is not left out of the course either: case discussion takes place in the live classes throughout the entire training.
